Adapted Exams
There are several types of of adaptive measures for exams, including:
- additional time,
- a quiet space,
- a computer and word processor with spellcheck,
- use of text-to-speech or speech-to-text software (e.g. Kurzweil or DNS),
- a digital recorder,
- transcription of exams into large print or electronic format, or on coloured paper.
The Access Service does not modify the content of exams in any way.
Exam Service - a Partnership between Access Service and Faculties
The Access Service Exam Team works in close collaboration with faculties and departments to ensure academic regulations are fully respected, especially when its students write their exams in Access Service exams rooms and under the supervision of Access Service staff.
Contacting Students during an Examination
Professors and students may want to be able to contact each other during an exam administered by Access Service.
Prior arrangements can be made for professors or TAs to come on site or contact students by the cell phone "exam hotline". For more information please contact us.
Providing Adapted Exams to Students in Class
Professors have the right to provide adapted exams to students registered with Access. If you wish to pursue this option, please contact us.
Last Minute Changes to the Exam Schedule
In the event of a last-minute change, modification or cancellation of an exam, please inform Access Service as soon as possible so that quick corrective action can be taken.
Exam Procedures
Students are required to respect procedures and deadlines as set out in the Adapted Exam Procedures. The Access Service may be unable to process requests for those who do not respect deadlines or procedures.
Deferred Exams
Students are made aware that they must present faculty with a medical certificate for all deferred exams. They are also required to meet the requirements defined by the faculty.
Role of the Faculty Contact Person
As soon as the Access Service receives a request for adapted exams from a registered student:
- The Adapted Exam Administrator sends the standard email request to the faculty contact person;
- The faculty contact and the professor then arrange the delivery of the exam(s) to the Access Service 24 hours before the scheduled time;
- The copy is sent to the Adapted Exam Administrator

- Once the exam has been completed, it is put in an envelope, sealed and returned to the faculty within 48 business hours by an Access Service employee bearing official identification;
- The faculty contact person signs and dates the delivery slip upon receipt of the exam envelopes.
