Adapted Exam Procedures
How to submit exam requests
Regular exams
- Schedule an appointment with a Learning Specialist to register with Access Service (AS) and determine which adapted measures should be put into place.

Complete an adapted exam request form for EACH exam you decide to write at Access Service:
Submit your exam requests as soon as you are aware of an existing exam date to ensure that deadlines are respected (see below); refer to your syllabus for the necessary information to complete your adapted exam requests and to uoZone for final exam dates. The time and date you request must match the time and date indicated in your uoZone account.
On-line
OR
In-Person at the Access Service reception - UCU 339. - You may only request those accommodations that have been established in conjunction with your Learning Specialist.
- An email confirmation will be sent to your uOttawa email for each request you submit; confirmations are usually sent within 2 business days of receipt of your request. Review each confirmation to ensure that all exam details are accurate and notify the Adapted Exam Service of any change/correction required. Please retain the confirmations you receive until after you have written your exam (see Cancelling an Exam Request, below). If you have not received your confirmation within 2 business days of submitting your request please send an email to examen@uOttawa.ca to notify them.
If you require sign language interpretation (ASL or LSQ) for the exam, contact interpretation team by email to reserve services as soon as possible.
Deferred Exams
- Meet with your professor, faculty or the Manager, Equity and Academic Success (Common Law) to discuss your needs.
- If a deferred exam is approved by your professor/faculty, obtain a written permission/confirmation establishing a deferred exam date and time.

Requests for deferred exams CANNOT be accepted on-line. Complete the paper form in person at Access Service
(respecting the timelines below) and attach the written permission/confirmation. Then, follow steps 3 and 4 above.

Once your adapted exam request is confirmed
- Note the scheduled start time and the location of your exam at Access Service. The exam may start earlier than the in-class start time.
- If you would like your professor to contact you during the exam to answer your questions or to share clarifications/corrections that have been made to the class, please make arrangements directly with your professor in advance of the exam. The professor can either come to your location or can call the Exam Hotline (number disclosed to professors only). Note: COMMON LAW students should make arrangements with the Manager, Equity and Academic Success.
On the day of the exam
- Please arrive at Access Service approximately 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time of your exam.
- Bring your student ID card.
- Exam proctors CANNOT answer questions related to the exam questionnaire. Only professors (and/or their teaching assistants) and the Manager, Equity and Academic Success (Common Law) are authorized to do so.
- Personal belongings are not allowed in the exam rooms.
- Food and drinks are not permitted in the exam rooms (except for bottled water).
- Scented products (perfumes and colognes, hand cream, body spray, etc.) are not permitted.
Cancelling an Exam Request
Cancellations of exam requests must be received in writing at least 24 hours before the scheduled exam date. Please reply to the email confirmation you received from Access Service and indicate that you would like to cancel your reservation.
