Access Service
Liaison with Housing Services
- First-year students are automatically guaranteed a spot in residence. However, students requiring an adapted unit because they have a disability or special needs, linked to a medical condition should contact Access Service, who will validate the request with Housing Service with the necessary supporting documentation (see below).
- A limited number of adapted units is reserved for students who have one of the following conditions:
- Visual impairment or blindness: a unit close to required facilities for ease of mobility and orientation;
- Hearing impairment or deafness: a unit with a strobe light linked to the alarm system;
- Mobility impairment: a wheelchair accessible unit;
- Other chronic illnesses: a unit with a semi-private access to a washroom or kitchen, etc.
Note: A chronic medical condition can validate a special need but does not give priority when assigning a unit. Requests will be processed in the order received.
- Procedures to follow to request an adapted unit:
- The student provides the following documentation to Access Service by email to adapt@uOttawa.ca, fax: 613-562-5976, or mail:
Access Service, University of Ottawa
85 University Pvt. (339)
Ottawa, ON, K1N 6N5
- A medical certificate: The medical certificate will be filed at Access Service. If you wish to obtain assistance in case of a building evacuation, we can provide your contact information to the following services upon request: Protection Service, Housing Service, Residence Life and the reception of the residence.
- A short note from the student indicating the preference of residence unit and his / her contact information (name, student #, email, phone number)
- The student sends a monetary deposit to Housing Service as soon as possible to reserve a unit.
- Housing Service will send the Housing Contract by mail to the student.
- Staying in residence for longer than one year
The guarantee in residence applies to first year students only. Therefore, if a student wishes to stay in residence for more than one school year, the student should consider a renewable contract, available only for the following residences: Brooks and Hyman Soloway. An exception exists that allows only those students living in the adapted units to renew their residence contracts annually.
- Attendant care services
The student is responsible for getting information about attendant care services available in the community. This is a link to the agency that can assess eligibility for funding and specific services available.
- Please consult this list for other helpful services in residence.
- Academic support and adaptive measures
Access Service contributes to the creation of an inclusive campus by developing strategies and implementing adaptations to reduce the impact of learning obstacles that are linked to a medical condition or a disability.
Students who require adaptive measures should contact Access Service as early as possible:
