Rights and Responsibilities

When providing adaptive measures, everyone involved has their own rights and responsibilities. Follow the links below to find out more about the roles of professors, students and the Access Service in creating a supportive and equitable learning environment.


Rights and Responsibilities of Professors

As a professor or other faculty member, you have the right to:

  • determine course content and methods of instruction;
  • ensure that the academic integrity and standards of the course are not compromised, and to consult Access Service on adaptive measures they feel are inappropriate;
  • fail students who have not met course requirements;
  • determine how to adapt their teaching style to meet requests for adaptive measures;
  • be assured that any audio-taping of lectures is solely for the student’s academic use.

As a professor or other faculty member, have the responsibility to:

  • provide adaptive measures recommended by the Access Service while maintaining the academic integrity of the course;
  • grade the work of a student receiving adaptive measures as you would any other student;
  • maintain the student's dignity and privacy;
  • work in collaboration with students and the Access Service to resolve disagreements regarding adaptive measures.

Rights and Responsibilities of Students

As a student you have the right to:

  • equal access to services and programs. Specialists collaborate with the student to put in place appropriate adaptive measures for exams and other academic support to optimize your conditions of learning and evaluation.
  • confidentiality. All personal information collected by Access Service specialists remains strictly confidential. No information can be released to family, faculty, administration, or off-campus professionals without your written consent. If needed, you may sign a Disclosure of Personal Information Form to allow the exchange of private and confidential information between Access Service and other establishments or specialists.

As a student, you have the responsibility to:

  • disclose your specific needs to Access Service specialists;
  • provide Access Service with appropriate documentation, or be willing to undergo assessment if none is available;
  • meet at least once yearly with an Access Service specialist to reactivate your file, re-evaluate your needs for academic support and ensure needed adaptive measures are in place at the right time;
  • work with the appropriate faculty member and the Access Service to resolve any disagreements regarding adaptive measures;
  • fully understand and comply with the Access Service Adapted Exam Procedures.

Rights and Responsibilities of the Access Service

The Access Service has the right to:

  • expect students to work collaboratively within existing procedures and regulations necessary for the efficient planning and provision of programs and services;
  • require that all students receiving Access Service services fully respect the Access Service’s Code of Conduct;
  • ensure that the rights of students registered with Access Service are recognized and respected.

The Access Service has the responsibility to:

  • review all documentation to ensure its validity, and as required, make arrangements for necessary updates;
  • continually carry out functional evaluations to identify students’ current needs in relation to their courses;
  • establish the adaptive measures and other academic support that best meet a student’s needs, including a need for financial support;
  • provide individualized follow-up with complementary adaptive measures and support to improve learning strategies and technologies as a direct aid to learning.
