Access Service
Transcription Services
What are Transcription Services?
Transcription Services provide students with a print disability access to academic materials in an alternative format, such as Braille, electronic text or audio-reproductions, under the provision of the Copyright Act S. (32)1.
An individual with a print disability is defined as someone who cannot effectively read printed material because of blindness, visual impairment, physical disability or learning disability.
The goal of Transcription Services is to provide students with timely access to alternative format materials that respond to the needs of the student.
Formats Offered
Transcriptions Services can provide the following format based on the needs of the individual:
- Braille: Grade 1, 2 or Nemeth
- Tactile Graphics
- Electronic Text (eText)
- Digital Audio Reproductions (MP3)
- Kurzweil™ Formatted Text
If you need transcriptions…
If you require an alternative format for your texts during your studies at the University of Ottawa:
- Make an appointment with an Access Service specialist. Meet with your specialist annually to reactivate and update your file and make an intake request for transcription services.
- Start your textbook search early. Transcription Services can work with you to contact your professors and identify required materials before courses begin. We strongly recommend giving your course schedule to Transcription Services at least one month before the start of classes in order to speed up the transcription process.
- Purchase your textbooks. Copyright law requires all students who request an alternative format reproduction to purchase an original copy. When you submit a request for an alternative format document, Transcription Services will ask for your proof of purchase.
Tips
- Include your course syllabus with your transcriptions request. This will allow Transcription Services to better prioritize production requests and provide you with faster, more efficient service.
- You can can drop-off and pick-up materials at the Access Service main reception located in UCU 339.
- If you want to receive your transcribed eText files by email, please advise your specialist. You must provide an email address that can receive large attachments of up to 2 megabytes.
- Because transcription is a time and labour intensive process, the earlier it can begin, the more likely the material will be available on time. Planning ahead is always a good idea; give your course schedule to Transcription Services as soon as possible.
