Internships

An internship is an ideal opportunity to gain experience!

A FEW DEFINITIONS:

  • A paid or non-paid work experience.
  • A work experience with a determined period of employment and different qualifications and recruitment procedures set by an employer.  For example: period of employment of 3, 4 6 months, more or less; must not employed or underemployed; has a post-secondary degree or other criteria established by employer.
  • A work experience considered as a summer job, obtained through a co-op term or can also be a volunteer position.

WHY GAIN EXPERIENCE THROUGH INTERNSHIP ?

  • To develop employability skills that all employers are seeking in future employees. 
  • To gain experience related to your field of study.
  • To improve your resume.
  • To make professional contacts through networking.

The Federal Government offers many possibilities of internships through special programs and many are paid experiences.

Below are a few examples of Youth Link programs:

  • Youth Employment Strategy

  • Career Edge arranges 6, 9 or 12 month internships for university graduates wishing to gain experience with an established company :

  • Human Resources Development Canada presents the Graduate Internship Project targeted primarily at students who have just completed their Master's programs in civil, chemical and environmental engineering, environmental studies and physical science programs that specialize in environmental concerns.
