Student Mentoring Program
Undergraduate Level
How can a mentor help you?
A student mentor is a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student trained expressly to provide support starting with the first year transition period continuously through degree completion. While student mentors are available to listen to your concerns and to answer your questions, they also engage in the delivery of
Individualized support
The student mentor provides an empathic ear to your concerns and offers support in setting your goals, in practising time and stress management techniques, and in acquiring more efficient study routines. The student mentor can also refer you to professional resources, if needed.
Study groups
Study groups are set up for the purpose of providing students who are taking first year “killer” courses with an opportunity to meet, to go through important concepts of the course, and get tips on how to best prepare for tests and exams. Study groups bring together students taking the same course or program of studies. (Please note, however, that study groups are neither teaching nor tutoring session).
The Centre for Academic Support and Programming of Activities in Residence (CASPAR), the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Health Sciences organize and coordinate study groups.
Workshops
Interactive workshops are an effective way to gain new ways of learning. Consult our selection of guides in effective study skills to choose the workshops you might wish to attend.
Special events
A number of special events are organised by student mentors to provide new students with opportunities to have fun and make new friends while contributing to their social and academic integration.
A few examples of special events:
- The Telfer School of Management organizes bowling nights (in the Fall) or hockey nights (in Winter);
- The Faculty of Law (Common Law Section) plans networking events for first year students;
- The French Immersion Studies arranges for cultural activities to allow students to be completely immersed in the culture and give them a chance to practice their second language skills.
Support on-line
The Telfer School of Management and the Faculties of Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences, provide support on-line using e-mail, MSN, Facebook, Twitter or MySpace.
