Tips: Before, During and After your appointment

Before your appointment:

  • Do not procrastinate! Plan well in advance (you may need more than 2 appointments).
  • Bring the professor’s assignment instructions to the appointment.
  • Print out your assignment: double-spaced and in legible font.
  • Choose sections of the work that you want to discuss.
  • Write down specific questions you may have (e.g. How do I reference this work?).
  • Revise your own work to the best of your ability.

N.B.: We strongly advise you to continue seeing the same Writing Advisor who will be able to guide you as well as monitor and optimize your progress.

During your appointment:

  • Participate: be engaged in the process.
  • Ask questions when you do not understand.
  • Practice what you are learning.
  • Be flexible about your ideas: question your own work.
  • Do not expect your whole document to be seen.
  • Respect the limits set by your Writing Advisor.
  • After learning a writing skill, actively try to apply it to your writing.

N.B.: Your participation; it is the key to a successful appointment and to progress in your writing.

After your appointment:

  • Complete your “homework” – follow the steps that the Writing Advisor has suggested to you.
  • Apply the writing skills learned during your appointment(s) to the rest of your assignment.
  • Plan your next appointment in advance in order to see the same Writing Advisor.
  • Write down any questions you may have.

N.B.: The best way to become an efficient writer is to apply the tools and strategies that you have acquired with your Writing Advisor.
